Grosse Pointe Shores to Macomb County?

A study done by those interested in making Grosse Pointe Shores part of Macomb County apparently have shown that the positives of such a move outweigh the negatives. [Detroit News]

Grosse Pointe Shores “receives virtually no direct services from the tax dollars” paid to Wayne County, and Macomb taxes are nearly four mills lower, the report found.

The report also showed the suburb paid Wayne County $2.73 million in property tax revenues last year. Had it been in Macomb, that figure would have been $1.67 million, the report said.

Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Schulte, who headed the committee and favors the move to Macomb, told residents Wednesday that property values could increase. Bus services would remain, and schools likely wouldn’t be pushed to another district, he said.

“It looks like there’s no downside,” Schulte said.

No downside, you say? You know who might find a downside?  Wayne County Circuit Court judges who live in Grosse Pointe Shores. Annexation of Wayne County’s portion of the municipality would put their homes out of their district.

Then again, according to various reports, you can buy property in Detroit for less than a tank of gas, so it’s not like they’d be without options.
