Retired circuit judge, lawyers team up to start new law firm

Crain’s Detroit Business is reporting that “Lawrence Charfoos of Detroit-based Charfoos & Christensen P.C. has moved to join retired Wayne County Chief Circuit Judge William Giovan and immigration attorney Robert Birach to open Charfoos, Giovan & Birach L.L.P. in the Penobscot building.”

  1. Dissapointed to see that Judge Giovan is associating himself with Charfoos. In 1992, the 6th Circuit (979 F.2d 390) affirmed the dismissal of Charfoos’ bankruptcy petition on the basis that his pre-petition conduct demonstrated bad faith in:(1) factual misrepresentations and omissions on financial statements and bankruptcy pleadings; (2) violations of state court orders; (3) extravagant lifestyle. These were not the qualities Judge Giovan was known for in his many years as a jurist.
